Niklay Teri Talash Mein: An Analytical Study

Abstract:

Voyage has been an essential part of human destiny since the beginning of civilisation. The urge to discover, explore, and understand the unknown is a defining feature of human nature. This instinctive desire for inquiry has continually propelled humanity toward cultural and civilizational advancement. Within literature, the travelogue stands out as an engaging and expressive genre, made even more compelling by the stylistic choices of its writers. In the history of Urdu travel writing, no discussion is complete without acknowledging the contributions of Mustansar Hussain Tarar. This Pakistani author holds a distinguished place in modern Urdu travel literature. Alongside travelogues, he has also left a notable mark on other literary genres such as the short story, novel, and newspaper column. His travelogue Niklay Teri Talāsh Mein (1972), published by Sang-e-Meel Publications, occupies a remarkable position in Urdu literature. As Tarar’s first travelogue, it received immense appreciation in the Urdu-speaking world. Its popularity can be gauged from the fact that, within fifteen years—up to 1978—six editions of the book were published. Spanning 488 pages, this extensive travelogue documents Tarar’s journeys through several Muslim countries as well as Europe. He organised the narrative into 28 chapters. In this work, Tarar emerges as a genuine traveller. Unlike many Urdu travel writers, he did not visit foreign lands to attend literary events; his sole purpose was exploration. As a writer, he sought to capture every meaningful experience. The travelogue reflects both his inner emotions and outward observations. He portrays the cultural, political, and social life of the countries he visited with emotional depth and vivid detail.
